STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. PENTAGRAM
Pentagram started working with Columbus Salame over 10 years ago— redesigning the identity, developing the brand and creating packaging for all product lines. When Columbus was ready to unveil a new, superpremium, handcrafted product line of salame—the Artisan Collection— the company asked Pentagram to design packaging that would set this line apart from the competition, as well as Columbus’ other lines.

The product itself inspired the look and feel of the packaging. The four salames featured in the Artisan Collection vary in size, are made in extremely small batches and are hand-tied and slow-aged in their natural casings. The understated design of the Artisan Collection labels—kraft label stock with hand-calligraphed product names—reinforces the handcrafted nature of the product and showcases the beauty and detail of the natural casings and twine.
