As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

Aroma Naturals’ core product offering is handcrafted, genuine aromatherapy candles. For the holiday line, which was part of a major rebranding program, Peggy Wong chose simple and recognizable festive elements to convey the company’s pure and natural mission. When combined, the bold color palettes and patterns instantly become a visual cue of gift wrap, capturing a seasonal yet modern expression of the brand.

“During the core rebranding process,” explains Wong, “I created a wraparound graphic detail highlighting key product attributes such as pure essential oils and 100 percent plant aromas.” Not only does the approach yield a quick and educational spin on the design, it’s also extended as a common element in holiday packaging to reinforce the company’s marketing platform.
