STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

A3 DESIGN
After a brainstorming session for a new logo for Goody’s Paint, A3 Design discovered similar shapes in the letter g and a paint can. They searched for the perfect g, soon deciding to create one instead.

In their resulting design, the paint can is outlined with a simple, bold stroke and morphs into the bottom of the g. The can leaves the paint color open for color options and applications. One of the many nontraditional applications for the g is a sticker on the top of each custom paint can: A sample dab of paint fills in the color on the sticker and indicates the color of the paint within. The Goody’s logo is stripped of all style, bold and clean, allowing it to stand apart from the more “messy” logos of competitors.
