96 MARK BURRIER
“Remember when you used to press leaves in
the pages of books?” inquires Mark Burrier, creator
of The Lucky Ones, a comic written in observance
of the everyday. This self-promotional
sketchbook collection was printed to sell online
as well as to give to prospective clients.
Showing more of the creative process than most actual finished
pieces, the sketchbook gives the viewer a behind-the-scenes look
at Burrier’s work. “I keep sketchbooks that I make daily entries
and drawings in,” he explains. “The pages included in this collection
were taken from two books kept from Spring/Summer
2005. The Lucky Ones’ title comes from a song of the same name
by the band Viva Voce. It was a favorite song of mine during the
period that these drawings were produced and I liked the idea
that, this being a collection, the drawings were ‘lucky’ enough to
be included.” These drawings are the “leaves” Burrier alludes to,
the kind of casual and intimate meanderings that artists more typically
hide from the public. But this designer undresses his work,
revealing naked poetry and effortless line drawings. According
to Burrier, the variety of experimental thoughts and techniques
found here “expose the things we do to cover up when no one is
looking.” by Aaron Tucker
