77 AESTHETIC APPARATUS
Aesthetic Apparatus does a lot of work for a local Minneapolis club, Triple
Rock Social Club. “Basically, Triple Rock informs us and other poster
artists what shows are coming up, and we tell them which shows we’d like
to create a poster for,” says Dan Ibarra of Aesthetic Apparatus. “Once the
poster is cleared with the venue, they put us in contact with the band and
management for approval.” Ibarra says the relationship with Triple Rock
is mutually beneficial. “The club gets some well-made posters that they
can use to promote and differentiate their events from the sea of other
black-and-white flyers, and we’re given the wholly hands-off respect to
create anything we like for the event.
“Danielson [formerly Danielson Famile] plays amazingly positive
and energetic music filled with irony-free ideas of love and
respect,” says Ibarra. “The front-man, Daniel Smith, has a voice
and musical style that we consider really original, but others might
find a little too weird for popular consumption. Our goal was to
make a poster that reflected the awkwardness but beauty of Danielson’s
music.” In this design Aesthetic Apparatus first employed
a hand-assemblage process. They cut and collaged sheets of paper,
images and color and arranged them in a manner that they felt
made sense. They scanned all elements in, rebuilt the design digitally,
tweaked the composition and type and output the final
design as a three-color screen print. “Whether we’ll get the opportunity
to do another poster design for Danielson is yet to be seen,”
says Ibarra. “But we will definitely keep doing posters for the
Triple Rock Social Club as long as they let us.” by Tami Terrell
