As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

90 THE SMALL STAKES
The Books is an experimental band that combines traditional instruments with samples of speech and found sound. Designer Jason Munn noticed the double Os in the band’s name and realized this opportunity was too good to pass up.

He unraveled an old cassette, constructed a tangle of magnetic tape and scanned it in. These posters were featured in store windows and posted at the venue to promote the gig. Munn also had a chance to see his work embraced by the masses: Extra copies were featured at the merchandise table at the show, where they quickly sold out. And the band? “I met them at the show,” says Munn. “They have been one of my favorite bands for a while and are great guys to boot.” by Alissa Walker
