As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

STEP Design 100 Annual 2007: Posters (cont'd)

89 THE SMALL STAKES
College Night is an annual party at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art where local students and faculty can soak up culture in the company of artists, DJs and local musicians.

Combining the elements of music and art was key for designer Jason Munn, but for the execution he also had to appeal to this design-savvy audience—namely, college students constantly bombarded with gig posters for cool events. “The concept was worked out fairly quickly,” says Munn. “Getting it down on paper took a bit of coaxing.” Munn also physically put the poster on paper—he screen printed the black and metallic silver image on each poster himself. These were sold as limited edition prints at the party, while the image was used on promotional materials from postcards to ads promoting the free event. by Alissa Walker
