STEP Design 100 Annual 2007: Posters (cont'd)

88 THE SMALL STAKES
A big fan of the introspective indie rock band The Shins, Jason Munn of Bay Area design firm The Small Stakes had a vision of an excavated heart while listening to one of the band’s songs, “Kissing the Lipless”: But you’ve got too much to wear / On your sleeves / And it has too much to do with me / And secretly / I want you buried in the yard / The gray remains of a friendship scarred.

The legendary live music venue Rock City commissioned Munn to create this poster to promote a Shins show in Nottingham, U.K. The spattered texture, although it looks haphazard, was tightly controlled by Munn himself, who screen printed each poster by hand. “I don’t like to surprise myself too much during the printing process,” says Munn, “but of course there are always surprises.” by Alissa Walker
