Design is a small planet, often self-referential, with well-worn paths for
exposition, criticism and analysis. When we contemplated devoting an
issue to self-promotion, we were acutely aware of certain tropes. The
usual way of portraying self-promotion by designers would be to focus
on the projects they use to market themselves and their firms—the
postcards, the tchotchkes, the e-newsletters, etc. But we decided right

STEP Design 100 Annual 2007: Posters (cont'd) |

85 METHANE STUDIOS
The Dave Matthews Band (DMB) has a vast and loyal fan base, with people
often following its tours from city to city. The shows take on a festival
quality. Methane Studios has a successful ongoing relationship with the
band and was asked to develop some unique poster designs that would appeal
to DMB’s fans.
“People of all ages attend the shows. For this design I wanted
to create a bold, simple, graphic image that would be easily recognizable
by fans,” explains designer/illustrator Robert Lee. “The
grilled cheese sandwich is very often sold at the shows in the parking
lots by fans to raise some cash and help feed hungry crowds
looking for scrumptious, cheap snacks. Who doesn’t like a grilled
cheese sandwich?” The poster was used primarily as merchandise
to sell to fans at the concert and on the firm’s website. Methane
Studios is currently at work on several upcoming 2007 DMB
limited-edition tour posters. by Terry Lee Stone
