The Submarines are a two-person band—Blake Hazard and John Dragonetti —who were formerly a couple. Michael Byzewski, partner with Dan Ibarra at Aesthetic Apparatus, says, “We worked mainly with Blake, and she’s visually minded. She had a lot of good ideas for us to run with.”

Aesthetic Apparatus’ relationship with The Submarines was “very collaborative,” says Byzewski. “The band definitely had ideas that they wanted to see explored, and we were happy to do that as well as offer new ideas.” Since the band had chosen an illustration for the cover of its CD, Aesthetic Apparatus’ main responsibility was to lay out the rest of the package. “The person who did the cover illustration also did a number of spot illustrations to be included throughout the design. The band wanted us to treat his art how we often do with the found art collage work that we do. “The Submarines really didn’t want to shy away from the literal interpretation of their name,” says Byzewski. “So the thinking really isn’t all that deep. Water and submarines … that’s what you get. Since the band is just the two people we also worked with the duality of the ups and downs of relationships.” by Tami Terrell
