The Crane Lettra Swatchbook serves a dual purpose: It acts as an educational tool for would-be letterpress printers, while at the same time demonstrating the beauty of the paper on which it’s produced. Even as letterpress increases in popularity, many people in the design community do not yet fully understand the peculiarities of the technique.

“I really wanted this to be a meaningful piece,” says Michael Osborne, president and creative director, “with content that would make it a virtual how-to primer on letterpress printing.” The book is not only beautiful to look at and pleasing to the touch—thanks to the textures of the paper and the tactile impressions upon it—it is also replete with facts, figures and information in timeline form about the history of printing and paper, while calling attention to Crane’s role in that history. “Combining offset lithography and letterpress printing in a way that allowed the two processes to enhance one another was a challenge,” Osborne says. “Also, the delivery of a ton of information in the form of an easy-to- look-at, compelling vehicle was a primary objective.” Doubly achieved. by Romy Ashby
