The saying is: Money makes the world go around. Fair enough—the lights have to stay on. The essential emollient, money manages to insinuate itself into all of our lives. And those who refuse to entertain the reminders that design is a business—whether it’s conducted in a studio, in-house or freelance setting—are always welcome to join the Starving Artists Guild.

61 COSTELLO COMMUNICATIONS
Located in the heart of Chicago’s West Side, The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance was looking to broaden its appeal among a variety of market segments, including neighboring African-American residents, the surrounding business community and the outlying communities who may not have considered supporting the Conservatory. Costello Communications was given the task of accomplishing their goal.

“We developed the concept ‘Cultivate Diversity,’ which speaks to their efforts of community engagement as well as their botanic practices,” explains Costello president James Costello. “We tried to communicate the concept in interesting ways and stay within the client’s budget. The seed packet attached to the cover includes a variety of flower seeds—several of which are featured in the report—to encourage recipients to cultivate their own diverse gardens.”

Elaborating on the concept of diversity, the report is printed on four different paper stocks, illustrated with graceful botanical drawings and photographs of teachers, volunteers and students enjoying the garden. The report was positively received by the Conservatory for successfully emphasizing its growth and maturity as an organization. From a designer’s point of view, says Costello, “the most refreshing part of this project was a client who was willing to take a risk.” by Dana Rouse
