“Understated and respectful”—
these are the words designer Petter
Ringbom uses to describe the
goals of the Five Year Report that
Flat created for the American Red
Cross. The report highlights the assistance
that has been distributed to
victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
Over the past several years the media had been flooded with
images of that tragic day. Flat opted for a clean, white design that
would allow readers to refocus on the intimate effect the Red
Cross has had on so many people. The front cover displays a folded
American fiag that had been given to the organization by a survivor
of the Oklahoma City bombing. The image “just made sense,”
says Ringbom. “It is humble yet has a lot of power to it.” Interior
pages are peppered with photographs of senators, office workers,
volunteers and survivors, who recount their stories from every perspective.
Among data and graphs are pictures of items that were
distributed by the Red Cross in the immediate aftermath of the
attacks. The report works in concert with the Red Cross website
to make information accessible to anyone from corporate donors
to blood donors. by Lauren J. Grundhofer
