“I hadn’t ever designed a photographer’s monograph before,” says designer
Bob Aufuldish, “so this was a great experience.” Harry Callahan: The
Photographer at Work was published in conjunction with an exhibition of
Harry Callahan’s work organized by the Center for Creative Photography
(CCP) at The University of Arizona in Tucson.
“I was trying to make a 21st-century version of a mid-century
modern book,” Aufuldish says. “One of the first things I decided
was that I didn’t want the plates centered on the page; that the
spreads should feel more asymmetrical and have more flow.” A
few rules governed how the photographs could be presented. “The
reproductions couldn’t be larger than the actual prints,” Aufuldish
says. “Callahan often worked quite small so there were a number
of times I made that mistake. No bleeds. No running across
the gutter. These constraints limited the amount of contrast I
could get when pacing the book. The sequencing of the plates was
done by the curator and the CCP. In the end,” he says, “I think
this worked out just fine. This project was an absolute joy. I got to
work with and think about Callahan’s beautiful and compelling
photographs for nearly a year.” by Dana Rouse
