As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

31 TURNSTYLE STUDIO
Commemorating Teague’s 8oth anniversary, Design
This Day: 8 Decades of Influential Design pays
homage to Walter Dorwin Teague’s book of the
same title written in 1940. This volume was intended
to showcase Teague’s work and to communicate
observations on the industrial design
industry in general.
“One theme central to Teague’s own design philosophy that
parallels our own is to be exacting in the details,” says Turnstyle
Studio’s creative director and principal Steve Watson. “We knew
that the success of the book would lie in its conception and execution
as a tightly crafted, unified product. We felt that to ring true
with Teague’s design aesthetic the book needed to be modernist
in feel, clean and uncluttered, and at the same time feel contemporary,
fresh and innovative.” Preventing the production of yet
another overly serious design book, humor—an important part of
Watson’s own philosophy as well as Teague’s—found its way into
these pages in several sections. “In many ways this was a dream job
for us,” Watson says, “a project with a compelling story to tell and
a client truly passionate about what they do—looking to stretch
themselves aesthetically and conceptually … [they] gave us the
freedom to push ourselves and them forward.” by Dana Rouse
