I do not envy the task of the judges for our annual Best of Web competition.
Besides the usual parameters for judging a design competition—layout,
typography, color, use of imagery—they also must consider factors
exclusive to the digital realm: interface ease-of-use, continuity, scalability,
content management, on and on.

47 TRICYCLE
“Tricycle has been focused on sustainability since 2002, and we sounded
like aliens to most people when we started. Today we sound very trendy.
Next year the trend will pass, and we’ll still be doing the same thing,” says
Michael Hendrix, the firm’s chief brand officer. Hendrix designed REVERB,
an anthology of articles on the current and future positions of sustainability
in the interiors industry.
Because of Tricycle’s unique position, REVERB brings together
new ideas and voices in one accessible resource. The books are visually
and tactically appealing, offering readers three sizes to chose
from, each with differing content. “We’re trying to communicate
to different people,” explains Hendrix. There is a small flip book
of pictures, a medium-sized book featuring articles and a combination
of the two in a collected volume. REVERB was edited by Tricycle
communications director Caleb Ludwick and put together
by the design team in a five-day creative frenzy, says Hendrix.
“The intense creative period of really getting into the articles and
responding to them reflected the way that we saw the book as a
document of the moment. A lot of the ideas were very pertinent in
June 2006, but today some of them already sound outdated. I kind
of like that about the whole process.” by Hillary Cook
