The saying is: Money makes the world go around. Fair enough—the lights have to stay on. The essential emollient, money manages to insinuate itself into all of our lives. And those who refuse to entertain the reminders that design is a business—whether it’s conducted in a studio, in-house or freelance setting—are always welcome to join the Starving Artists Guild.

46 PRINCETON ARCHITECTURAL PRESS
The genius of Liquid Stone: New Architecture in Concrete lies in its ability to toe the line between coffee table book and technical tome. “It’s a hybrid,” says Jan Haux, a senior designer at Princeton Architectural Press. “It’s a technical topic but with very exciting architecture.” Lay people can enjoy the pure beauty of the cutting-edge buildings while those in the trade dig deeper into the text and diagrams.

To satisfy these different readers, Haux placed in-depth essays at the front of the book on uncoated stock. This gives them the look and feel of an academic journal. Plus, the team at Princeton Architectural Press worked with more than 40 architectural firms to get just the right images—ones that would demonstrate concrete’s abilities and highlight the gorgeous forms of each project. There are also subtle nods to the flexibility of concrete throughout the book, including the gentle wave shapes formed by the text on each section’s table of contents. by Michelle Taute
