17 AUFULDISH & WARINNER
As a catalog, RADAR: Selections From the Collection of
Vicki and Kent Logan, is itself a work of art in an elegant,
translucent slipcase, companion to the exhibition
in the Anschutz Gallery of the Denver Art Museum.
The curators, explains designer Bob Aufuldish, “chose
RADAR as the title as a way to describe the Logans’
collecting vision.” The exhibit itself, as stated in the
catalog, “highlights their uncanny ability to put their
fingers on the pulse of what’s happening in art all over
the world.”
Each step of the way, Aufuldish worked directly with the museum’s
curatorial team. Their articulate reasoning behind the choice
of the title, RADAR, led to many of the ideas he used in the project’s
design, from the choice of cover image to the choice of typefaces.
To a designer who often builds a project out from typeface
selections, this one was especially interesting in its use of type as a
subtle reinforcement of the ideas behind the title. If the art in these
pages appears to be especially vivid, that’s because it is. Aufuldish
and production coordinator Sue Medlicott were able to check
proofs against the actual art works, the result of which, he says, “is
very satisfying.” by Dana Rouse
