Design is a small planet, often self-referential, with well-worn paths for exposition, criticism and analysis. When we contemplated devoting an issue to self-promotion, we were acutely aware of certain tropes. The usual way of portraying self-promotion by designers would be to focus on the projects they use to market themselves and their firms—the postcards, the tchotchkes, the e-newsletters, etc. But we decided right away this issue would not be about that stuff.

STEP Design 100 Annual 2007: Catalogs (cont'd)

12 STUDIO RASIC
Studio Rasic is very hooked into the arts and culture scene in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. They are friends of the sculptor Petar Barisic and have worked on several catalogs for him, gaining his trust. For the exhibition “Slozenice” (Compounds) the designers, given complete creative control, developed a catalog that perfectly complements Barisic’s work.

Design elements are simple, structural and minimal, like the sculptures themselves, which are a series of wooden battens composed in a variety of interchangeable dimensions specific to an exhibition site. The catalog cover features the artist’s name, over which is printed a tinted varnish of the show’s name, creating a typographic depiction of the concept of compounds. Interstitial pages in the square book pick up on various geometric elements found in the sculptures. “This is one of our beloved projects. We work the best when clients don’t interfere in design; that is when we have the freedom to work without compromises,” explains creative director Ante Rasic. “Usually, after projects like this catalog, clients we work with that like to interfere, with whom we have to make compromises, often ask us, ‘Why don’t you do something like this for us?’” by Terry Lee Stone
