Design is a small planet, often self-referential, with well-worn paths for exposition, criticism and analysis. When we contemplated devoting an issue to self-promotion, we were acutely aware of certain tropes. The usual way of portraying self-promotion by designers would be to focus on the projects they use to market themselves and their firms—the postcards, the tchotchkes, the e-newsletters, etc. But we decided right away this issue would not be about that stuff.

STEP Design 100 Annual 2007: Annual Reports (cont'd)

7 CAHAN & ASSOCIATES

“In our project kickoff meeting I remember hearing the words journey and momentum a lot,” recalls senior designer Sharrie Brooks. The goal of the project would be to outline another year of solid progress for YRC Worldwide while highlighting its strategic journey as a global transportation services company and its place as a leader in the industry.

“I began focusing on the theme of ‘Going Places’,” says Brooks, “which led me to feature a series of images of places around the world where YRC goes.” With the company’s brand present through an established color palette of orange, blue and gray, Brooks decided to present all of the images in black and white, resulting in a striking impact. “I love clean and elegant and minimal,” she says, her favorite aspect of the whole design being the Japanese-folded pages that made it possible to perfect bind the book. She’s proud of the way she presented the type—flowing above the images throughout. “I have been able to have Japanesefolded pages in an annual report before,” she says, “but I’ve never been able to get away with sideways type.” by Romy Ashby
