Design is a small planet, often self-referential, with well-worn paths for exposition, criticism and analysis. When we contemplated devoting an issue to self-promotion, we were acutely aware of certain tropes. The usual way of portraying self-promotion by designers would be to focus on the projects they use to market themselves and their firms—the postcards, the tchotchkes, the e-newsletters, etc. But we decided right away this issue would not be about that stuff.

STEP Design 100 Annual 2007: Annual Reports

6 TITANIUM DESIGN GROUP

Not every annual report comes complete with a maze or a sketchpad. But the Menomonee Club for Boys and Girls rejects the expected tedium instead with crosswords, word searches, picture games and a magic marker-scribbled cover. “They could just go to Kinko’s and print out a list of their expenses,” says Kelly Friedl of Titanium, who has been designing annual reports for the Menomonee Club for six years now. “But instead they fight for the budget!”

Since the 60-year-old, Chicago-based Boys and Girls Club is not-for-profit, spending has to be minimal. “We’re really good at keeping expenses down,” says Friedl. She chose inexpensive paper and kept to black-and-white ink on the publication’s interior pages. The idea for the activity book came to her when she glimpsed her own children’s coloring book at home. Fun Book is also full of original illustrations by students at the American Academy of Art, since Friedl sits on the association’s board. This annual report serves more functions than just providing potential donors with information. “I keep them in the car and the kids do them around the clock,” laughs Friedl. “They’ve been in-a-pinch after-school savers!” by Zoe Weisman
