“We excitedly responded to a request for proposal from the Museum of
Modern Art (MoMA) to design the website for its exhibition on French
artist Odilon Redon—and we were fortunate enough to have been chosen,”
says art director and Behavior Design partner Ralph Lucci. “As a
symbolist and contemporary to the impressionists, Redon was an innovator
in his own right. We enjoyed both the subject matter and his avantgarde
perspective. Our appreciation for his imaginative work grew each
day and continued to be an inspiration long after the exhibition.”
After deciding upon the creative framework of the site, the
greatest challenge arose, Lucci says, in “how to properly present
the work, including the long, narrative captions within an interface
that promoted exploration of the influential themes and corollaries.
The noirs demanded that viewers immerse themselves
within the realm of the fantastical,” he adds, “so thematic groupings
were co-established with the curators that represented
re-occurring motifs. The ideas of monsters and myths and metamorphosis
stirred from the darkest depths of the imagination set
the stage for a self-exploratory interface.”
The final product pleased the client tremendously. “They formally
expressed how pleased they were with the results (and with
the entire experience of working with us), says Lucci, “and labeled
the site a very nice complement to the exhibition.”
