Design is a small planet, often self-referential, with well-worn paths for exposition, criticism and analysis. When we contemplated devoting an issue to self-promotion, we were acutely aware of certain tropes. The usual way of portraying self-promotion by designers would be to focus on the projects they use to market themselves and their firms—the postcards, the tchotchkes, the e-newsletters, etc. But we decided right away this issue would not be about that stuff.

Much like professional wrestlers, streetball players are often known for their antics as much as their athletic talent. “Most basketball players have overbearing personalities,” says Todd Purgason, creative director at JUXT Interactive in Newport Beach, Calif. “The games are about how you diss another player more than the moves.”

With this in mind, the designers used these in-your-face basketball stars as the driving force for www.boostmobilestreetball. com. The site lets fans stay up-to-date on the And 1 Mix Tape Tour, a traveling streetball game sponsored by Boost Mobile. It also captures the spirit of streetball perfectly, with actual players soaring across the site and ducking down from behind the Boost Mobile logo to shoot missiles.

The design is dynamic, colorful, and textured, just like the players themselves. Users can watch videos of their favorite stars or get the latest game stats. “The players really dug it,” Purgason says. “A lot of these guys are showmen. This is an opportunity for them to show off.” And that showboating is what makes the game—and site—so entertaining.
