Ron Berg has an offbeat sense of humor, so when it came time to update
his website, the photographer wanted to let his personality show through.
“Oftentimes, I think people’s sites in this industry look the same or have
the same tonality,” says Karen Knecht, creative director of konnectDesign
in Santa Monica, Calif. “The idea was to do something different and a little
shocking.”
The site hinges around a block of off-the-cuff, first-person text
on the home page that lets Ron show off his persona. Todd Eaton
of Mojo Studios in Portland, Ore., decided it would be appropriate
to have the copy double as the site’s navigation.
Besides an invitation to look at “the pretty pictures,” viewers
can jump in on the fun as they read statements like: “Think
the site sucks, click you. Think the site rocks, click, click, click.”
Choose the former and you’ll get laughed at and called a loser. The
latter rustles up a cheering crowd. Last, but certainly not least,
Berg’s gorgeous photos are grouped into blocks of 17 images, easily
navigated by rolling over the numbers. Knecht worked hard on the
edit to show off Berg’s range of work, as well as his unique style—
a one-two punch that sets him apart from stock agencies. “It
exceeded my expectations,” Berg says of the site.
