“I think what distinguishes this site from others is the clarity of the design,
the colorful pop style, and the novel, layered navigation,” says
160over90 associate creative director Dan Shepelavy. The site is fun,
classy, and in its colorful choices lie a host of idiosyncratic pleasures creating
a delightful allure.
Open House, in Philadelphia, sells ultra-modern home and garden
accessories, so the site design had to reflect that attitude and
style. “Our audience is the educated, discerning, tech-savvy connoisseur
interested in design, decor, architecture, and pop culture,”
he says, noting that the most successful aspects of the site’s
design are in the style, ease of navigation, and product browsing.
“The layered interface was such a new way to interact with the
content,” he says, “that we had to really invent and test the code
and user experience to an unusual degree.” All the effort paid off,
with the final result fresh and overwhelmingly positive, making
the client very happy. Most fulfilling for Shepelavy was watching
the team “create something so clean, yet distinctive, that still
functions as a solid retail site. Everything at our agency is designed
by teams,” he adds, “and if you know the designers and coders, it’s
quite easy to discern individual strands of their personalities and
aesthetics in the site.”
