“Liska & Associates has always worked with photographers and has an enormous respect for the power of a great image to tell stories,” says creative director Tanya Quick. For this design, Liska partnered with group 94 in Belgium for coding. “They’re amazing technically, as well as great designers in their own right,” says Quick. “They also added nice motion and little ‘winks’ to keep it interesting as you move through it.”

The site allows for easy creation of custom portfolios, the downloading of full-size images with dynamically created watermarks and database-driven image pairings. “We really pushed the database scripting to do more than we ever thought possible … and a lot of it in the ‘11th hour’ of the project when the design was pretty fixed. We wanted to be able to see representative images along with names for photographers we didn’t know,” she says. “We wanted to be able to search by category as well as discover more of a photographer we liked; we wanted to have big photos that loaded quickly so we didn’t get bored or impatient; and we wanted it to be a simple, intuitive, and a neutral platform that made the images the heroes.”
