STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

WEB/INTERACTIVE DESIGN
Best of Web Design 2006: Business (cont'd)

A website with the task of effectively portraying a whole building and its particular ambiance has its work cut out for it. The creative concept behind this web design, according to 160over90’s associate creative director Dan Shepelavy, is the idea that great architecture reveals itself over time. “Making that concept interactive and weaving together disparate types of content—video, original graphic design, and descriptive copy—into a seamless experience,” he says, “was the hardest part to solve.”

160over90’s inspirations for the choices they made in this design were not the most obvious. Instead, they found their muse in brochure and site designs for luxury cars and modern art museums. Shepelavy’s favorite aspect of this website design is “how restrained the actual design is so that it provides a stage for the spectacular renderings and animation. Also, the animations that reveal the content are quite elegant,” he says. Overall the site delivered exactly what they hoped it would. “It presented the green and high-design aspects of the building in a really compelling manner,” he says, “and gave a rich, real, and palpable sense of the building solely using good design, engaging copy, and artful renderings.”
