STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

BAG IT
Looking for that perfect bag combining form and function to replace your laptop carrier, briefcase, purse, and cosmetics bag? Then try the playful Layered Bag designed by Sakurako Kaneko from MoMA Design Store. It combines three bag sizes and colors, which together add up to one very cool interchangeable bag in four variations. The large, dark charcoal size works well as a laptop or folder holder, and the two smaller pouches (medium is light gray, small is orange) are great for personal items. The set is held together with flip-lock metal fasteners, the zip-top pouches are made from nylon, and the shoulder strap is adjustable webbed cotton. With this combination, you’ll never have to carry more than one accessory again.

BOASTWORTHY BOTTLES
If you’ve searched the world over for a top-quality water bottle that never needs to be replaced, only to find those boring camping-gear-looking doohickeys, don’t despair. The new Swiss Sigg Water Bottles from Flax will last you a lifetime, even if you’re not an adventurous, outdoorsy type. Available in six fresh designs (Pattern, Logic, Harmonie, Take Part, Bubbles, and Summertime), the Sigg bottles come in lightweight, seamless aluminum and are manufactured with an FDA-approved, non-corrosive lining that’s resistant to acidic and isotonic drinks, and they won’t flake even if you dent the metal. And if you think that sounds tough, Sigg bottles are also guaranteed never to leak, even if under pressure (carbonation, that is), and the screw tops come with dirt-proof cap so you won’t get a muddy mouthful. Selected patterns (all are solvent-free) available in either 1 liter or .6 liter sizes.

SITTING PRETTY
Aptly defining the true function of a chair, Florian Kremb of Amplifier recently created the prototype of Floor/Wall Chair, which symbolizes that a chair is basically a fragment of the floor connected to a vertical fragment of the wall. The chair is made of a metal frame structure with both vertical (floor) and horizontal legs (wall). A removable plywood seat with a rubber back can be used on its own or can be attached to the metal frame. The Floor/Wall Chair was created for “The Idea of a Chair,” a project symposium/call to action given by Krabbesholm, a Danish design shop. It’s currently made to order through Amplifier by specialist craftsmen in Denmark.

PILLOW TALK
Striking a chord with creatives who enjoy decorating with design in mind, Hybrid-Home of San Francisco has introduced a line of graphically inspired pillows, available at Velocity Art and Design. Their unique, witty visuals— owls, airplanes, deer, and smartly dressed men reminiscent of a scene from Reservoir Dogs, among other patterns—provide interesting, alternative ways to accent your home or o¡Öce. Made of 100-percent “super-soft” linen fabric, the pillowcases include a hidden zipper for easy removal and cleaning. The Hybrid-Home Pillow Collection is a sure-fire conversation starter, part one being “Where in the world did you find that?”
