STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

DESIGNERS

When you look down at that pink “yes” indicator on the pregnancy test and realize everything is about to change, fitting a child into your world comes with many questions. Whether you were planning for a little one to run about your house or not, you now must shift gears—after the shock subsides—between the anxious parent to now being part architect, part contractor, and yep, you guessed it, part designer.

DESIGNERS
The Boom in Kids’ Design: Move Over, Cinderella!

Moving baby in today is no longer about painting the old office pink or blue; parents these days have embraced the designer within and are giving their little bundle a fresh and—dare I say—hip start. Parents are happy to pass on the over-the-top princess or tractor truck bedding now that so many designers are trading in their fountain pens for crayons and creating eye-catching products that become more and more a part of the house that’s showcased rather than tucked away. From bedding and clothes to furniture and accessories, there’s been a real charge forward concerning design for kids’ products that can still be whimsical, fun, and childlike, but fresh and easy on parents’ eyes.

It is no surprise that many big companies like The Gap, Martha Stewart, and Pottery Barn have reshaped their empires to fit in a line of products for babies and small children, but in the last few years, many designers who are now parents have taken their experience in designing for adults and turned it into one that satisfies both their professional and parental raison d’etre.

There are now many companies creating stylish products for kids that have been conceived over the last five years, and doing quite well. Thanks to the internet, many are conducting business right from their home offices, allowing little Jet or Blue to be home with them and underfoot.
