STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

Rising Up From Down Under (cont'd)

Chemistry Design created a packaging system for Crommelin Solutions, a manufacturer of chemical coatings for the building industry, that turned the large and varied product lines into a highly organized, color-coded system.

CHEMISTRY DESIGN

Located on Australia’s west coast, Perth-based Chemistry Design was established in 1991 by Roland Butcher and David Perl. Together, creative director Butcher and senior designer and production manager Perl manage one of the West Coast’s most well-recognized studios. The business outsources writers, strategists, and web engineers as required for individual projects.

Chemistry Design oΩers what Butcher describes as “a total design service for Australian and international clients across a diverse range of industries.” Design expertise is offered in the areas of brand identity programs, publications, annual reports and prospectuses, web design, packaging, informational design, and architectural signage.

Working closely with clients on all aspects of projects ensures that design is an integrated and strategic function and part of the marketing process—this is central to Chemistry’s philosophy. “When agencies started calling themselves ‘brand agencies,’ the increased significance of design in the minds of the business community impacted favorably on our business,” says Butcher. “However, superficial styling versus content remains an issue with clients who haven’t worked with designers before.”
