The self-published punctuation manual Type It Write was awarded a Certificate of Typographic Excellence Award from the Type Directors Club in New York in 2004.

VOICE DESIGN

One of Australia’s smaller but no less creative states is South Australia, where Voice Design resides. Voice is located in the city of Adelaide and was established in 1999 by co-directors Scott Carslake and Anthony de Leo. The firm offers design services to a broad range of clients in the areas of corporate identity, print, environmental design, signage systems, website development, and typeface design services.

Carslake and de Leo share a passionate belief in the development of their design thinking and practice of visual communications. They have set up a separate division of the company called Voice Projects to run self-initiated studies in design processes and client-related interests with the aim of generating ideas that can be fed directly into client solutions.

Commenting on what constitutes good design, Carslake says, “Idea-driven design is the foundation for developing effective communication solutions, but you also need visual interest to attract.”

De Leo adds, “Designers may move back and forth between the idea and visual interest many times before developing a solution that communicates on both platforms.”
