Design is a small planet, often self-referential, with well-worn paths for exposition, criticism and analysis. When we contemplated devoting an issue to self-promotion, we were acutely aware of certain tropes. The usual way of portraying self-promotion by designers would be to focus on the projects they use to market themselves and their firms—the postcards, the tchotchkes, the e-newsletters, etc. But we decided right away this issue would not be about that stuff.

For new Melbourne fashion boutique Assin—carrying an exclusive selection of cutting-edge labels from a new generation of international designers—FOD developed an identity and environmental graphics.

FABIO ONGARATO DESIGN

Established in 1992 by Fabio Ongarato and Ronnen Goren, FOD is one of the most recognized names in the industry with a reputation that stretches to international shores. The studio is based in Australia’s creative capital, Melbourne, located on the Southeastern Coast.

FOD describes itself as a truly multidisciplinary design studio working with clients in the corporate sector, fashion, architecture, and the arts. The scope of work is equally as broad—covering interior design, exhibition design, publishing and print, interactive, advertising campaigns, corporate identity, and boutique packaging.

“It’s about how to make good design work as a business,” says creative director Ongarato. “We choose clients carefully and work with them to develop an understanding of how design can benefit their business.” The FOD process encourages exploration of the broader creative base of contemporary art, relying on collaborations with designers, artists, architects, writers, illustrators, and industrial designers to introduce new perspectives to client projects.

This approach supports its philosophy that creative output and intelligence are the key ingredients to deliver intuitive, value-adding design solutions that, says Ongarato, deliver “outcomes that clients couldn’t have imagined themselves.”
