STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

022 LUDOVIC BALLAND, JONAS VOEGELI
THE REMINGTONS

LATIN NAME: Scribere Machina Pistol
AGE: 31 and 25

DESCRIPTION:
The Remingtons was founded in 2002 in Basel, Switzerland. Ludovic Balland studied graphic design in Basel and has worked for studios like Dalton & Maag of London, Tschumi & Küng and Müller & Hess in Basel, and Das Magazin of Zürich. Jonas Voegeli studied visual design in Zürich and worked for Alan Ward of Manchester, Graphics International and E-Fact in London, and Müller & Hess. The Remingtons specializes in print design including books, posters, photography, typefaces, and corporate identities. Balland and Voegeli also teach typography and graphic design in Lausanne and Zürich, Switzerland. They have won several awards for their posters, and their latest project was a book for Globus Cassus, an architecture firm that represented Switzerland at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

VOICE:
The name Remingtons comes from Remington & Sons, makers of the first typewriter. About 20 years later, Remington & Sons sold its typewriter business and started the Remington Arms Company. “From the typewriter to the gun,” says Voegeli. “This is interesting to us. Like the range of difference between a manual worker and a publisher, this is a central motivation in our work. It’s not only about editing a single product, it’s also about continuity of editorial work.”

DISTINCTIVE MARKINGS:
The following maxims come from The Remingtons’ self-made “dogma” catalog: “Always leave a hidden message. Search where you’ve found something before—if you can’t find it, search again. Do not use the zoom—go closer. Show your perception. Try to be honest. Invent something. Involve friends. Always do your bills with the Remington typewriter.”

HABITAT:
The Remingtons’ studio is based in Basel, Switzerland, next to the river in a “quiet backyard.” “We share a studio with Andreas Muster, who is probably the best lithographer, and P. Brunner, who gets all the good music into town.”

SPOTTED BY:
Martin Woodtli, Swiss designer and member of AGI: “Ludovic and Jonas are fresh, young, talented, and thoughtful designers.”
