As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

keywording staff has defined more than 600
concept words attached to its images. For instance,
it has 1,169 images that relate to diversity,
204 images about domination, 2,868 images
about dramatic, and 1,363 that are dreamy. Users
of the site are able to use any of several thousand
concept words to easily connect their feelings
and needs with the images in the collection.
Concepts are the second most popular group
of search terms used on the site—after lifestyle
