As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

Design Solutions: Finding the Perfect Image (cont'd)
[23] PictureQuest has implemented new
search technology that finds images faster and
returns more accurate results without any compromise
to speed. PQ’s full-text search allows
users to input multiple keyword search strings,
such as man woman walking on beach, without
slowing down the rate of returned images.
The new Oracle-based search engine, which
supports up to 140 diΩerent languages, delivers
greater and more relevant results on multiple
keyword searches 60–80 percent faster.
PQ’s search technology allows users to be more
specific up front, getting back relevant results
faster. Additional functionality based on this
leading technology, including search of similar
keywords, will be rolled out in the future.

[25] Artzooks.com has updated its site with
many features and unveils a new interface designed
to make finding images faster and easier.

state-of-the-art, fast search engine technology,
refined searches (search within results), advanced
search capability (by publisher, media
type, color, orientation, price, etc.), search by

per page). 866.644.1644, www.artzooks.com
[27] Image Source recently launched a new
website which uses a thesaurus-based search.
This allows far greater accuracy in searching,
since the search engine becomes more intelligent
over time as it qualifies words that people
use to search, then links them to existing and
new thesaurus branches. As the Image Source
collection grows, the search becomes even more
accurate as new keywords are added to the site,
linking to those already in the thesaurus. The
search contains a clarification feature, meaning
that users can refine their search terms. Users
can also view an image and choose to search on
any of the keywords associated with that image,
making it far easier to find related images for a
project. www.imagesource.com
