74. MODERN DOG DESIGN CO.
When you’re famous for your outlandish concert posters, it’s hard to make
people notice the little things you do well. “We’re not that well known for
doing great logos, and I think it’s some of our most successful work,” says
Modern Dog’s Robynne Raye. So the Seattle firm decided to give its logos
a separate gig. These first-of-a-series promotional booklets were assembled
by hand and sent to their very short mailing list. “We’ve only sent
them to people we already work with,” says Raye. “And it has directly led
to more work.”
Within the screenprinted French-fold cover, Modern Dog’s
identity work—“Don’t call it branding,” says Raye—is organized
by client, displaying logos, stationery, ticket designs, signage, and
custom lettering and characters, plus several explorations.
Hilarious self-deprecating copy the designers wrote themselves
rewards readers with a glimpse of Modern Dog humor: “I
know you’re probably thinking we did the Windex logo, too, but
we didn’t.”
With a piece this small, the logos are truly the stars, largerthan-
life on each page. It’s almost like a flipbook, your thumb sliding
over the tiny perfect images as they transform from one to the
next. Alissa Walker
