62. ONE9INE
The 2003 opening of the Skirball Center, the only major performance
space associated with a university in New York City, was a major coup for
NYU. The venue is not only multidisciplinary, but multimedia, with a
keen awareness of the impact of technology on performance.
One9ine began working with the center long before its opening,
birthing the overall identity of Skirball, then incorporating it into
everything from brochures to exterior video signage to the website.
“The goal of the site was to convey the results of these experiments
on stage in a fluid, energized space,” says art director Warren
Corbitt. “The immediacy of the performances is demonstrated
by the large photographic presence, typographic interventions
informed by the sight-lines of the theater seating, and the site
movement aiding an intuitive interface for navigation.”
The Flash introduction layers production images heavy on the
hot end of the color spectrum; hard bodies and howling faces make
it clear that theater at Skirball is a sensual rush. Ken Coupland
