As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

STEP 100 Design Annual 2005: Web (cont'd)

66. 2ADVANCED STUDIOS, LLC.
Evans Fruit Company, a family-owned and -operated apple distributor, and one of the largest and oldest of its kind in Washington state, asked 2Advanced Studios to design a website that reflected its heritage and quality products. “The first thing we needed to understand was what set Evans’ product apart,” says Eric Jordan, chief creative officer for 2Advanced. “So they sent over a huge crate of apples.” These apples inspired the design firm to create a down-home, Americana-inspired site that gave the fruit company the personality and brand identity its website and materials previously lacked.

With product in hand, the group cultivated an appreciation for all things apple and the heritage behind them by pulling from personal experiences of family trips and warm apple pies. 2Advanced wanted the graphics of the site to lend it authenticity, so the design team determined the need for an imaginative approach.

“We wanted a design that would feel homegrown and would carry a historical Americana look,” explains art director Paul Drohan. Thus, the concept of apples falling out of a tree was used. Ornamental typography and a mix of serif fonts (offset with a pixel font to help give it a contemporary look) carried off the historical theme. Paper textures, worn labels, wood imagery, and warm colors were also used to convey the earthy feel.

“When we presented the first build out of the home page with Flash, our client let out a big ‘Wow!’” Jordan beams. “Feedback from Evans’ clients and the general public has also been overwhelmingly positive.” Marcy Slane
