As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

65. EKIZIAN DESIGN
David Ekizian defines himself as a print designer, and his works on paper
are rich with texture. Elegant subdued hues and a mix of screens, spot colors,
and photography evoke an aura of refined complexity, whether it’s the
retro-looking brand identity for Levi’s Footwear or a souvenir of an executive
enlightenment event.
But although Ekizian had designed websites for clients, he
struggled with how best to translate his own brand to the medium.
“I felt overwhelmed by the complexity and theatrics I had seen
on the websites of other creative firms, and I was afraid of having
to commit to a design for myself,” he admits. Motion graphics
by Squarewave allowed Ekizian to apply time and space to his 2D
oeuvre. In the Flash intro, spinning Es form kaleidoscopic images
in time to dreamy ambient music, refine into a cross, then coalesce
into the monogram. The visual pun is reinforced with playful
