I do not envy the task of the judges for our annual Best of Web competition.
Besides the usual parameters for judging a design competition—layout,
typography, color, use of imagery—they also must consider factors
exclusive to the digital realm: interface ease-of-use, continuity, scalability,
content management, on and on.

64. MADE IN LA
It wasn’t until the development of the web as an artistic medium that photographer
and print designer Nikolai Cornell found a way to express his responses
to some of the world’s great buildings. His photographic gallery,
Shadow and Light, showcases and contextualizes work made on an architectural
study trip in 1995. Developing the site in Flash and providing the
interactive elements became a labor of love for the nonprogrammer.
Cornell used the interface itself to provide information about
the geographical relationships between the sites he photographed,
as the visitor navigates from a map of the European continent to
the locations of the buildings. “I wanted to show the context in
which my photographs were taken and how they related to the
countries and cities in which they were taken,” Cornell says. “Visitors
can go on their own journey through the countries I visited by
allowing my photographs to tell the story.” Ken Coupland
