I do not envy the task of the judges for our annual Best of Web competition.
Besides the usual parameters for judging a design competition—layout,
typography, color, use of imagery—they also must consider factors
exclusive to the digital realm: interface ease-of-use, continuity, scalability,
content management, on and on.

STEP 100 Design Annual 2005: Annual Reports (cont'd) |
|
49. SAMATAMASON
“Last year Aptar Group had many stories to tell,” says Kevin Krueger of
SamataMason. Aptar, which makes dispensing products, reached $1 billion
in annual sales after steady increases in each of the last 38 years. “We
realized that consistency is the one thing that made this possible. Consistency
in management, product innovation, growth in different markets.”
The project began as a wrap. But as Krueger points out, “A 10K
can still be smart and eΩective if you’re willing to put thought and
creativity into it.” A Z-fold cover let them use half of the book
for the 10K, with a splash of color on the inside covers to contrast
with the serious tones in the rest of the book. The other half
communicates the consistency message. Repeated images were
important to “show how their dispensing systems are relied upon
to do the same thing over and over, day after day,” says Krueger.
“Redundancy, in this case, reinforces our point.”
Then there’s that number, stretching boldly over three spreads.
“When the CEO saw that, he loved it, and burst out laughing,”
Krueger recalls. “That was a great moment.” Laurel Saville
