“Happy accidents and angelic stumbles are great, but one has to think,
too ... and in some cases, not think,” remarks Danny Gibson. Designing
this poster called for a sizable pinch of both.
The Vines poster story began one fine day years ago, when
Gibson’s roommate lined his kitchen cabinets with a jaunty vineprinted
contact paper; he stashed the leftover paper roll in Gibson’s
basement studio. Another fine day, three years later, Gibson
spied a listing announcing that Australian rock bands The Vines
and Jet were touring near his town, Kansas City, Mo. Serendipity
met inspiration with a resounding thwap. Gibson says, “Without
a client’s request or even permission to do so, I adhered the paper
onto old posters—I found them in the dumpster at my day job as
a janitor—slapped a few words on with spray paint to simulate
rock band gear stenciling and rubber stamps, and then made some
crafty incisions and dices, to present the appearance of a suitcase.
“Thus, I cranked out a large stack of limited-edition, easy-to-carry, diecut, anti-computer-concert-advertisements for The
Vines and Jet,” he concludes. Amen to little wings of inspiration!
