“I believe in simplicity, spontaneity, and playfulness in my life,” says Steve
Hartman of Creativille, Inc., of St. Louis. Designed to tout a live recording
session of local St. Louis jazz artist Dave Stone, the concept behind
this poster stemmed from the simplicity of shape, color, and typography,
as well as the overall “coolness” inspired by the posters and album covers
Blue Note Records has created, Hartman confides.
The designer wanted to make it a commemorative piece. Each
poster is silkscreened in blue, then hand-illustrated with an acidfree
UV-resistant black marker. Intending the posters as one-ofa-
kind works of art, Hartman hand-numbered all 100 of them
with a marker. “What I like most about this process is that it
leaves no poster exactly alike,” he says.
The art on the poster is an interpretation of the tenor saxophone
that Stone plays. “He plays in a free sort of way, like Coltrane,”
notes Hartman. “So the illustration is meant to mimic his
musical style.” The squiggly lines that make up the sax give you
that relaxed but exploratory feeling that comes with a good freestyle
sax solo. Marcy Slane
