STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

SPEED, STYLE AND BEAUTY
The man who made millions designing shirts with embroidered miniature polo players is now giving something back to society—well, it’s more like a loan. Ralph Lauren (née Lipshitz) is parking 16 of his world-acclaimed prized possessions—classic European sports cars—in Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, March 6 through July 3. Never before has this collection of exceptionally designed Bugattis, Ferraris, Porsches, Mercedes-Benzes, Jaguars, and Alfa Romeos been exhibited together. “Speed, Style, and Beauty: Cars from the Ralph Lauren Collection” is an artful display of function and form illustrating the evolution of car design from the wealthy patrons who commissioned and raced the cars to the coachbuilders who designed them. www.mfa.org

DESIGN ARCHIVES
Devoted readers of AIGA’s annual 365 may be surprised by the lightness of this year’s visual volume. The association published an abridged version in order to launch its extensive online Design Archives. Winning work from the past four years’ worth of 365 and 50 Books/50 Covers competitions is now online and free for perusal. Search by name, client, category, region, or keyword. (The archives will expand over the next five years to include all winning work dating back to 1980.) Create personalized light-boxes to store and share favorites with peers, students, clients, or family members who still don’t understand exactly what you do for a living. Designed and developed by Second Story of Portland, Ore. http://designarchives.aiga.org
