STEP INSIDE
As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

THE JURY'S IN
When Ireland’s premier hotel company, Jurys Doyle, decided to open a four-star luxury hotel in its sister city of Boston, it found the perfect place: the former Boston Police Headquarters, a stunning 1925 architectural landmark located in the fashionable Back Bay neighborhood. Jurys spent $60 million to preserve many details of the original structure including the magnificent limestone facade. A nod to the building’s former tenants is seen at Cuffs—a pub elegantly decorated with memorabilia donated from police archives. The interior designs furnished by Concepts 4 of Long Beach, Calif., achieve a modern sensibility, particularly with the placement of contemporary Irish art and design. www.jurys-bostonhotels.com

SIGNATURE SHOP
When graphic designers Chip McCuiston and Carr Kortan met at an AIGA annual report show in 1990, they had no idea they would eventually get married, let alone become owners of the oldest American craft gallery in existence. The two bought The Signature Shop & Gallery in Atlanta eight years ago from its original owner, Blanche Reeves, who opened the seminal storefront 42 years ago. Today, they’re proud to represent more than 100 craft artists working in fiber, wood, clay, and glass, including the Moulthrop family, three generations of woodturners. The hot couple of the sculptural ceramic world, Robert Brady and Sandy Simon of Berkeley, Calif., are showing 36 pieces of their latest work at Signature through March 26. www.thesignatureshop.com

GLAD WORKS
When the creator of the cherished children’s book The Polar Express, Chris Van Allsburg, collaborated with Festival Ballet Providence to choreograph a piece about his other magical bestseller The Widow’s Broom, he met Gina DiSpirito, founder of Pawtucket ad agency Glad Works. Van Allsburg was so impressed with the 30-second television spot she produced (pro bono) to promote the performance, he hired her to design and develop his popular and playful website … just in time for the Academy Awardwinning team of Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) to release The Polar Express on the big screen. So shines a good deed in a naughty world! www.gladworks.com
