The saying is: Money makes the world go around. Fair enough—the lights have to stay on. The essential emollient, money manages to insinuate itself into all of our lives. And those who refuse to entertain the reminders that design is a business—whether it’s conducted in a studio, in-house or freelance setting—are always welcome to join the Starving Artists Guild.

21. MIRES
“It’s a dream and a curse to tackle a branding assignment for a printing company,” says creative director Scott Mires. “Because your options are almost limitless production-wise, it can lead to some high-flying printing solutions.” A revolutionary 600-line printing process and some of the most heavenly stock options known to man tempted the designers, but Mires vowed to keep this message simple. “The essence of the Steve Woods Printing Company is one of incredible service and impeccable printing quality,” explains Mires. “The company’s simple and straightforward vision and values demanded a matching solution.”

Steve Woods Printing wows clients from Taylor Guitars to small Phoenix businesses by focusing on their overall business success, a standard instilled by Woods’ father, an icon in the printing industry. The logo combines the best of these concepts: Classic typography alludes to the value of tradition, and the initials are woven together like the printer’s seamless relationships with clients.

The business card is a meaty stock that the Mires camp felt strongly about showcasing. “It’s similar to a firm handshake while looking straight into someone’s eyes,” says designer Mario Porto. “Its character is immediately communicated.” Tactile details like rounded edges and a soothing sable ink serve as reassuring reminders of Steve Woods’ friendly style.
