I do not envy the task of the judges for our annual Best of Web competition.
Besides the usual parameters for judging a design competition—layout,
typography, color, use of imagery—they also must consider factors
exclusive to the digital realm: interface ease-of-use, continuity, scalability,
content management, on and on.

Pinocchio gone haywire! A story in GQ titled “WHY MEN LIE” inspires a fantastic, allegorical illustration mirrored by an equally creative and convoluted typographic illustration, creating a big mess of lies. Figure 1d. IRON AT WINTERTHUR
DESIGN: Studio Blue, Chicago
CREATIVE DIRECTORS: Kathy Fredrickson, Cheryl Towler Weese
DESIGNERS: Cheryl Towler Weese, Tammy Baird, Maia Wright
TYPEFACES: Tribute, Ol Franklin Wide, Bureau Grotesque
The designers wanted to create a book that conveyed the gritty resilience of cast-iron objects that were often used because they could withstand extreme temperatures and conditions. "We used extremely large type and black solids along with details that highlighted the surfaces and textures of cast iron. We also wanted to evoke a sense of past when the only advertising was print, and tone was conveyed through typographic nuance, so we created broadsides using type exceprts as section dividers." |
