As Tiffany Meyers observes in her overview of the 100 winners, one can’t peg 2009 as the year of any specific color or typographic convention. But the winning projects are reflective of today’s increasingly diverse design discipline. In fact, one has to wonder if there is any longer such a thing as a design discipline—in light of today’s fast-changing and even amorphous practice, the word discipline seems a little out of place.

89 VISUAL DIALOGUE
Friends of Old Time Music: The Folk Arrival 1961–1965
contains a collection of recordings made of legendary
folk musicians from the South playing in New York
City for the first time. This “arrival” had a tremendous
impact on the course of American music. Fritz
Klaetke’s firm has worked with Smithsonian Folkways
for years, and Peter Siegel—who recorded, produced
and annotated the project—hand-picked Visual Dialogue
for this job.
The accompanying booklet pays homage to the portraits of the
musicians taken by such luminaries as Alan Lomax and Robert
Frank, and showcases original concert posters designed by
John Cohen. “Being a bit of a type geek, one aspect that I thought
worked well was the cover of the booklet,” Klaetke says. “All the
various woodblock type is reproduced at 100-percent size from
the original concert posters.” Cohen, Klaetke notes, was not only
a multitalented artist with a Yale Art School background, he was
also a member of the New Lost City Ramblers, one of the folk
groups included in this collection. In a way, Klaetke says, “I think
opening the box and seeing the booklet cover with the energetic
wood-type composition suggests experiencing the music for the
first time.” by Romy Ashby
