When creating posters to promote The 24 Hour Plays’ annual Broadway
show, John Krull of Shine Advertising took the theatre company’s mission
as inspiration. “We were trying to bring to light the pressures of creating
a play in 24 hours by comparing it to other events that take place in
24 hours.” Referencing the revolution of the Earth and the beating of the
human heart, Krull’s designs comment on the monumental challenge of
writing, directing, rehearsing and performing a play, all within a one-day
time frame.
The resulting publicity posters, which were plastered across New
York City, use bold colors and clean lines to stand out amid busy
surroundings, as well as a surprising wood-grain textured stock
that reveals itself on close inspection. “We didn’t want the poster
to be overproduced,” says Krull, “because a 24 Hour Play is something
that happens very quickly and is never repeated.” Part of the
posters’ draw certainly lies in their handmade feel, in addition to
their catchy text, whose tone and voice Krull describes as “a little
bit quirky, a little absurd.” In this way, the posters mirror their client’s
spirit of distinctive creativity. by Hillary Cook
