70 AESTHETIC APPARATUS
“We often describe this Dinosaur Jr. poster as ‘not as totally retarded as
the last poster we did,’” says its codesigner, Michael Byzewski. He’s gotta
be kidding. This is a powerful poster, inspired by Dinosaur Jr.’s music and
band history, as well as what Byzewski describes as “an ongoing love affair
we have with bird crap and fecal matter of all kinds.” Go figure. It’s art.
The wiseacres at Aesthetic Apparatus had a relationship with both
the band’s management and the venue in Minneapolis. So when
they got word that Dinosaur Jr. was heading their way fast, they
jumped on the poster. “We hired a high school orchestra to play
Dinosaur Jr.’s entire catalog of songs while we screen-printed the
poster, and fitting them in our studio was tough,” snarks Byzewski.
“Keeping concentric circles in register is sort of tough as well.”
At least he has fun while he works, which is nice for him while he
awaits the day he makes some real money. “J Mascis, the main guy
in Dinosaur Jr., is a man of few words,” Byzewski says. “But we did
hear him mumble to someone else that he liked the poster. We
were happy about that.” by Dana Rouse
